What this webcam test is

This free webcam test checks that your camera works and shows what your browser receives from it: a live preview, the picture size in pixels (resolution) and the frame rate. It uses the browser's getUserMedia API, described in the MDN: MediaDevices.getUserMedia() documentation and the W3C: Media Capture and Streams specification. Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or sent to us. The video is shown in a video element on this page and is not recorded.

How to test your webcam

  1. Press Start camera and choose Allow when your browser asks for permission.
  2. Check the preview. Use Mirror the preview if the left-to-right view feels backwards; this only changes the preview on this page.
  3. If you have more than one camera, pick the one you want from the Camera list. The list shows names once you have allowed access.
  4. Open Camera details to see the resolution and frame rate your browser is receiving, and to request a different size such as 720p or 1080p.

What resolution and frame rate mean

Resolution is the width and height of the picture in pixels. 1280 x 720 is usually called 720p, 1920 x 1080 is 1080p and 3840 x 2160 is 4K. Frame rate is how many pictures per second the camera delivers, written as fps; 30 and 60 are common. Some cameras offer lower frame rates at their highest resolutions, so the largest size is not always the smoothest. A webcam test shows what the camera sends to the browser, which can differ from what your streaming software (OBS Studio, vMix or a hardware encoder) is set to capture.

Test your camera before you go live

A camera that works in a browser tab is a good first check before a broadcast. Once it looks right here, add it as a video capture device in your encoder, then pick an output resolution and frame rate that your upload speed and the destination platform can handle. The bitrate recommender shows each platform's documented settings and the bandwidth calculator shows the upload speed you need. If you plan to reach several platforms, Multistream Platform takes one RTMP or SRT stream from your encoder and relays it to YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, Kick and other destinations, so you only need to set the camera up once. See how to multistream with OBS Studio and features.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • Camera access was blocked. Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar and set Camera to Allow for this site. If no prompt ever appeared, check your operating system's camera privacy settings and that your browser is allowed to use the camera.
  • No camera was found. Check the cable, any physical privacy shutter and whether the device is disabled in your system settings.
  • The camera is busy. Another app or browser tab, such as a video call or your encoder, may already be using it. Many cameras can only be used by one app at a time. Close the other app and try again.
  • Black or frozen picture. Stop and restart the camera, try another USB port, or pick a different camera in the list.
  • Needs a secure page. Browsers only allow camera access on https:// pages and on localhost.

Privacy

The camera stream is attached to the preview on this page. It is not recorded, saved or uploaded by this tool, and the camera is released when you press Stop camera or leave the page. Your browser shows its own indicator while a camera is in use.

Webcam test FAQ

Is this webcam test safe and private?
Yes. The preview runs in your browser and the video is not recorded, saved or uploaded by this tool. Your browser asks for permission first and shows an indicator while the camera is on.
Why does my browser say the camera is blocked?
You or your device blocked camera access for this site. Allow Camera for this site in the address-bar settings, then press Start camera again. Operating system privacy settings and workplace or school policies can also block cameras.
Why is the resolution lower than my camera's maximum?
A browser picks a default size unless one is requested. Use Request a resolution under Camera details to ask for 720p, 1080p or 4K. The camera, its connection and the browser decide what is actually delivered.
Does the mirror option change what viewers see?
No. It only flips the preview on this page. Mirroring in streaming software such as OBS Studio is a separate setting on your video source.
Why does it work here but not in my streaming software?
Another app may be holding the camera, or the software may be set to a different camera, resolution or frame rate. Close other apps that use the camera and check the device selected in your encoder.
Can I test a phone camera or a USB camera?
Yes. Any camera your browser can see appears in the Camera list after you allow access. Phones may list front and back cameras.
What resolution and frame rate should I stream at?
It depends on the platform, your upload speed and your encoder. See the bitrate recommender for each platform's documented settings.
